Engine impressions of the Mahindra XUV300 TurboSport

This turbo-petrol engine, known as the mStallion 130, is related to the 2.0-liter turbo-petrol found in the XUV700, Scorpio, and Thar. The 1,197cc, three-cylinder XUV300 TurboSport is comparable to the existing 110hp, 1.2-liter turbo-petrol variant that is sold alongside.

But in addition to various ancillaries, this mStallion 130 is equipped with a new turbocharger, high-pressure direct injection, and variable valve timing. As a result, it not only promises to have an 18.2 kpl fuel efficiency rating (against the XUV300’s 17 kpl), but also has the highest power and torque ratings in its class of 131 horsepower and 230 Nm (21hp and 30Nm more).

Interestingly, it has an over-boost function that, for a brief period, helps extract an extra 20Nm when the accelerator is depressed more than 70%, between gears 2 and 6, and when engine speeds are between 1,750 and 3,500 rpm.

We only had a brief opportunity to test drive the vehicle on a narrow gymkhana track, but we can attest that the engine is quite smooth and that, even at higher revs, the typical three-cylinder thrum is kept to a minimum.

The manner in which this engine reacts to inputs from the accelerator creates another favorable initial impression. This 1.2-liter doesn’t seem to be tuned for efficiency like its larger 2.0-liter sibling. This Mahindra doesn’t appear to hold back on performance, eager to deliver at every flex of your right foot, in contrast to most turbo-petrol cars, where throttle responses are softened down in favor of pollution and fuel efficiency. Although there is some turbo lag, as long as you keep the engine turning between 1,900 and 3,800 rpm, you’ll be able to drive quickly.

Although this engine doesn’t have a high rev range, and its power distribution tapers off rather drastically at 4,500 rpm, its diesel-like mid-range should be sufficient for the majority of driving aficionados. According to Mahindra, the XUV300 will accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in an astonishing 10.9 seconds, outpacing all of its competitors. Mahindra’s claims haven’t given us a chance to verify them, but if they are accurate, it will be almost 2 seconds faster than the 110-horsepower turbo-petrol.

The 6-speed manual shifts cleanly into gates, just like the normal version, although the throws and clutch pedal travel are still somewhat long. Stay tuned as we hold our opinions on other areas until we have a chance to fully assess this vehicle.

Should I buy a Mahindra XUV300 TurboSport?

Let’s start by talking about pricing, which is the big issue. Yes, the XUV300 was already one of the most costly vehicles in its class, and now that the TurboSport has been introduced, it has surpassed all others in price. It doesn’t represent outstanding value because of its outdated interiors, limited boot, and ongoing lack of key current features expected in a car of this price.

The XUV300’s strengths continue to include its sturdy construction, which earned a 5-star Global NCAP crash test rating, its roomy interior, and its assured driving style. The XUV300 is now even more thrilling to drive thanks to the manual transmission and new, more powerful engine. Mahindra deserves praise for making the effort to satisfy automobile aficionados, especially at a time when driving becomes less enjoyable. With this generation, Mahindra could have greatly improved the XUV300’s interiors and feature list, making it much simpler to recommend.
