Maserati Teases Open-Top is a luxury Italian automaker, thus new models aren’t released all that often. When the cool Maserati MC20 debuted last year, after what seemed like an eternity, the much-anticipated Maserati flagship had large shoes to fill in comparison to its predecessor, the genuinely insane MC12. In a year’s time, Maserati will be working on a new convertible version of the MC20.

Maserati revealed that the MC20 sports vehicle will also be available in an open-top version shortly after its introduction in September 2020. Fast forward to the end of 2021, and Maserati has teased photographs of the MC20 convertible in camouflage livery.

Despite the camouflage, the sheet metal is essentially identical to that of the coupe, with the same sleek lines. I wish Maserati had been a little more dramatic here, as it lacks the flamboyance of the MC12. Now, I understand that design is subjective, but with a flagship supercar from Italy, one would expect some drama.

At first look, there aren’t many variations between the MC20 convertible and its coupe version, with the MC20 convertible still having a sleek, poster-worthy style. When gazing at the roof, though, the variations are obvious. Despite the disguise, the roof structure and roofline are clearly visible, with the windshield replaced by a new panel that conceals the roof-reclining deception. Despite these modifications, Maserati promises that the MC20 convertible will continue to be composed of carbon fibre and composite materials.

The cockpit is expected to be mostly unchanged, with carbon fibre elements around the centre column, steering wheel, and paddle shifters, as well as Alcantara and stitched leather throughout the remainder of the sports car. A 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Amazon Alexa, Maserati Connect navigation, a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, and a wireless smartphone charging should all be kept.

The MC20 convertible will almost certainly keep the same 3-litre twin-turbo V6 engine that produces 630PS and 730Nm and is mated to an 8-speed DCT transmission as the coupe. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in less than 2.9 seconds and reach a top speed of almost 325 kilometres per hour. The MC20’s convertible isn’t the only thing on the way; the automaker has also announced that an electric version of the sports car is in the works.

Maserati is expected to unveil the MC20 convertible in early 2022. The coupe is expected to arrive in India in late Q1 2022, with a price tag of roughly Rs 3.5 crore (ex-showroom India). It will compete against the Ferrari F8 Tributo and the future McLaren 720S in India.

But I’m sure any gearhead would be happy to give up a little speed in exchange for a chance to listen to the ‘Nettuno’ twin-turbo V-6 engine, which delivers 621 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque. This is an experience to cherish, as Maserati, like the rest of the industry, is moving toward electrification, and an all-electric MC20 is on the way “as read and reported by www.zigwheels.com”.
